Literacy – InitiaLit

From Reception to Year 2, students participate in InitiaLit, an evidence-based literacy program that uses a systematic synthetic phonics approach.

Students are explicitly taught letter–sound relationships in a carefully planned sequence. They learn to blend sounds to read words and segment words into sounds for spelling.

The program also develops phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, giving students strong foundations for successful reading and writing.

Learner Engagement and Agency

At WBPS, we want every child to be an active, confident and engaged learner. Students learn best when they feel safe, valued and connected, and when they know their ideas and contributions matter.

Learner agency gives students meaningful opportunities to have a voice, make choices and take responsibility for their learning. In the classroom, students ask questions, share ideas, set goals, respond to feedback and reflect on their progress.

Teachers guide and challenge students while encouraging curiosity, independence and perseverance.

Student Leadership

Our outstanding student leadership program provides opportunities for students to represent their peers, contribute to our school and develop confidence, responsibility, teamwork and communication skills.

Student leadership opportunities include:

  • School Leaders
  • House Leaders
  • JP Buddies
  • STEM Leaders
  • PALs (play activity leaders)

At WBPS, leadership is about participation, service and making a positive difference. We encourage every student to recognise that their voice matters and that they can positively influence their learning, school and community.

Learning Support and Intervention

WBPS uses a tiered approach to ensure students receive the right level of support. Classroom teachers differentiate learning to meet individual needs, while student progress is monitored to identify those who may benefit from additional targeted teaching.

Our learning interventions include MiniLit and MacqLit for literacy, QuickSmart for mathematics, and the Focus Student Model for students in the upper primary years. Speech and language support is also available for identified students.

We offer social learning programs, including What’s the Buzz?, to help students develop confidence, communication skills and positive relationships.
