Starting Reception

South Australian government primary schools offer two major Reception intakes each year: one at the beginning of the school year and another in Term 3.

Your child’s eligible starting time depends on their fifth birthday:

• Children who turn 5 before 1 May can start Reception in Term 1 of that year.

• Children who turn 5 between 1 May and 31 October can start Reception in Term 3 of that year.

• Children who turn 5 after 31 October can start Reception in Term 1 of the following year.

Children beginning Reception in Term 1 complete four terms of Reception. Children joining the mid-year intake complete six terms.

Most children begin school in the year they turn 5, and all children in South Australia must be enrolled at school by the age of 6.
