Figures of Impact Podcast
Our Year 5 and 6 students are putting their communication skills into action through the exciting Figures of Impact podcast project.
The podcast gives students the opportunity to interview inspiring people who are making a positive difference in their community and beyond. Guests have included former WBPS student and Iron Man Brayden McKenzie and local Member of Parliament Aria Bolkus MP, with many more conversations to come.
Preparing and producing a podcast involves much more than speaking into a microphone. Students research their guests, craft thoughtful questions, practise active listening and learn to respond confidently during an interview. They also develop valuable skills in teamwork, planning, speaking and digital production.
As part of their preparation, students participated in workshops with two experienced communicators:
· Mark “Soda” Soderstrom; 7NEWS presenter, coached students in active listening and effective interviewing.
· Dr Chrisanthi Giotis; journalism lecturer at Adelaide University, helped students develop their improvisation skills and craft engaging questions.
Figures of Impact is a wonderful example of learner agency at WBPS. Students take an active role in shaping each conversation, sharing the stories of others and producing something meaningful for a real audience.
New episodes are released regularly so be sure to follow West Beach Primary School on Facebook for the latest updates, guest announcements and links to each episode.
